Viet Cong – Fader Fort – SXSW Music 2015 Recap

When looking back at a Viet Cong show, whether a few minutes or a few days later, words still seem to escape the cerebellum. You’re left more with emotions of being stunned and amazed after catching the Calgary outfit, including their slot at Fader Fort among the wet and the wild that rainy day.

I’m not sure where one song left off and another started, but not in that annoying jam-band kind of way. It was more like watching a David Lynch film where confusion can set in from one scene to another, but you can’t look away, feeling invigorated and a bit scared at the same time.

What can’t be denied is the tenacity of drummer Mike Wallace, whose left arm was wrapped and bandaged, leaving him with only his right arm to pound away at the skins while receiving percussion assistance from Austin drummer, Thor Harris.

Viet Cong had to cancel their appearance at the Spillover Festival in Dallas over the weekend so Wallace could get his arm taken care of, but they’re set to play Larimer Lounge tonight. Not sure who will step in to help Wallace out again, but there are plenty of drummers in Denver that would be honored to be his left arm.
